188 Scholarships Granted from the "Suada Dilberovic" Fund for UNSA Students

On Monday, 30 January 2012 in the UNSA Rectorate’s Ceremonial Hall, the scholarships granting from the "Suada Dilberovic" Fund was held.

A total of 188 scholarships were granted from the Fund out of which socially vulnerable and extraordinary talented students from all UNSA Faculties and Academies are getting financed for the 2011/2012 academic year. The scholarships are separated in two categories:

The first category: extraordinary talented students - 36 scholarships

The second category: socially vulnerable students - 152 scholarships

The University of Sarajevo organizes this humane event for the fourth year, during which the "Suada Dilberovic" Fund is being promoted and scholarships granted to socially vulnerable and extraordinary talented students of the University of Sarajevo.

Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr Faruk Caklovica, in his address said that this humane action led by the University of Sarajevo stood for direct support and assistance to students in overcoming the complex socio-economic situation.

"Our wish for this globally unique Fund is to provide resources for as many students as possible, keeping in mind the fact that there are no budget allocations for these purposes, and at the same time every year we have an increasing number of registered students in the socially vulnerable category" said Rector Caklovica.

Rector Caklovica also stated, with expressing his greetings to the friends of the University who have been a part of this unique human action: "In this hard period, when the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina still has not the state level authorities, we, as an academic community with a lot of skill and love, have provided our own funds to grant scholarships to 188 UNSA students. The provided funds we consider as a success when it comes to scholarships granting to students of the University of Sarajevo, and we are proud that this human activity has become a part of our academic community's tradition. We are also proud of the humaneness of our students who when enrolling in the 2011/2012 academic year paid substantial funds with the intention and desire to help their colleagues".
Address by Prof. Dr Faruk Čaklovica, Rector University of Sarajevo

Mr. Zoran Seleskovic, Secretary General of the University of Sarajevo, informed the attendees about the procedure of scholarship granting procedure from the „Suada Dilberovic" Fund, and stated that the basis for scholarships granting and all the procedures for scholarships awarding were regulated by the Rulebook on Scholarships Granting to UNSA Students from the "Suada Dilberovic" Fund. He also stressed that 463 students applied to the competition which had been opened until 17 November 2011.

On behalf of the University of Sarajevo's students,  Mr. Ahmed Nurkovic, President of the Students' Parliament of the University of Sarajevo, greeted the attendees and expressed his gratitude to all those who supported the "Suada Dilberovic" Fund and made a promise that this action would be continued. He stated, with invitation to students to contribute to the "Suada Dilberovic": "We, the students, should be proud of our achievement, because the number of cases where students in such difficult situation help their colleagues to make their education go easy, is small. Only through education we can achieve progress for our country and our society".

On behalf of student scholarship winners from the category of extraordinary talented students, Anel Lepic, Junior student at the Academy of Fine Arts, made the following address: "We are all aware of the negative things that alienate young people today away from the book. Despite this, our community meets the students who stand out by the achieved results in all spheres of their interest. Since I am a student of the Academy of Fine Arts, this scholarship will help me a lot in further work in the area of visual and artistic expression and creative thinking, as well as to other in terms of their artistic work and interests, giving us all additional enthusiasm and encouragement. This is of crucial importance, both of personally and collectively, since the University of Sarajevo's students show remarkable results in countries around the world. At the behest of this year's scholarship winners, I thank to all those who have recognized the importance of these activities and made their contributions. In the end, I would like to draw your attention to an old Japanese proverb that should be the guiding principle for all students, saying: No one stronger is stronger than a knower. "

A sophomore student from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo, Alema Mehić Alema spoke on behalf of the student scholarships winners from the category of socially vulnerable. "This kind of assistance and support to students expands the possibilities of active involvement and activity in the academic life, providing equality for students with low-income to be active members of the scientific community, to get their ideas, critical thinking and creativity promoted. The ''Suada Dilberovic'' Fund is the only project where students give their modest financial contribution led by desire to help their colleagues and to provide them with better conditions for studying. This project of financial nature shows the humaneness and solidarity within the academic community and the fact that such humane act contributes to the feeling of social solidarity" said Alema Mehić. She also stressed: "I can say with certainty that this project is a great support and encouragement for a young person in their way of acquiring knowledge, a joyful and inspiring act, but also an important life lesson in our future work and activities, telling us to be useful members of the academic community and through our contributions, provide to the University an equal status in the European scientific community".

The financial assets for the "Suada Dilberovic" Fund, in addition to employees, teachers, assistants and students of the University of Sarajevo, were provided by the individual and business partners, friends of the University. We express our gratitude to the Huawei Technologies Company that donated 12,500 U.S. dollars to the "Suada Dilberovic" Fund.

We express our congratulations to all scholarship winners. To all donors to the Fund, we express our most heartfelt gratitude for participating in this humane activity with the hope that we will continue the successful cooperation next year!
