The 12th  UNSA Senate Session Held


The University of Sarajevo Senate held its regular 12th Session on 17 July 2013 with 14 agenda items.

Under the Statute of the University of Sarajevo, which entered into force on 28 June 2013, as well as in accordance with the Rules of Procedure for the University of Sarajevo Vice-Rectors Election, the UNSA Senate passed a unanimous decision on:

•    Abrogation of the decision on the appointment of Prof. Dr. Dzenan Djonlagic on assuming the office of Vice-Rector for Teaching and, ruled on his appointment to the office of Vice -Rector for Finance;
•    Abrogation of the decision on the appointment of Prof. Dr. Faruk Mekic on assuming the office of Vice-Rector for Research, and ruled on his appointment to the office of Vice-Rector for Scientific/Artistic Research;
•    Abrogation of the decision on the appointment of Prof. Dr. Ugo Vlaisavljevic on assuming the office of Vice-Rector for International Relations, and ruled on his appointment to the office of Vice-Rector for International Cooperation.

Under the Rules of Procedure for the University of Sarajevo Vice-Rectors Election, the Senate of the University of Sarajevo unanimously elected Prof. Dr. Zehra Kreho into the office of Vice-Rector for Teaching and Student Issues at the University of Sarajevo.

Prof. Dr. Zehra Kreho’s Biography

The Senate unanimously adopted a decision to confer a University of Sarajevo’s honorary doctorate degree to Prof. Dr. John Louis Esposito, Center for Muslim–Christian Understanding Director, Georgetown University, Georgetown (Washington, D.C.) USA and the President of the American Academy of Religion.

The approvals were given to the election of 22 teachers from eight Faculties into the higher academic degrees, equivalences granted for elections that had been already done at two University of Sarajevo’s Faculties. Rulings were done for 35 candidates who are in the process of obtaining PhD degrees at eleven Faculties.

Within the item “Approving the Curricula”, the UNSA Senate gave approval to:
-    Study programs at the first and second studies cycles for the Department of Theology and Department for Islamic Science and Religious Education at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, University of Sarajevo;
-    Amendments to the curriculum for the fifth year of studies at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Sarajevo;
-    Amendments to the PhD curriculum of the Psychology Department at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo;
-    PhD Studies curriculum (third cycle of studies) at the Faculty of Dental Medicine with Clinics, University of Sarajevo;
-    Programs for the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth year of studies at the Faculty of Dental Medicine with Clinics, University of Sarajevo;
-    Curriculum for the 11th and 12th semester at the Faculty of Dental Medicine with Clinics, University of Sarajevo;
-    Curriculum of the third cycle of studies entitled “Forestry and Horticulture” at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Sarajevo.

Within the item “Invitation to tender”, the UNSA Senate gave consent to:

-    The decision to start the competition for enrolling the first generation of PhD candidates from the area of literature  “Literature and Culture” at the Department of Comparative Literature and Librarianship, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo in 2013/2014 academic year;
-    The decision to announce vacancies for enrolling the third generation of PhD candidates from the area of sociology “Modern Sociology and Globalization Processes”, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo in 2013/2014 academic year;
-    Decision to announce the competition for enrolling the second generation of PhD candidates   at the studies “German Language and German Literature in the Context of Media Culture", Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo in 2013/2014  academic year;
-    Decision to announce the competition for enrolling the second generation of PhD candidates  from the field of Psychology, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo in 2013/2014 academic  year;
-    Decision to announce the competition for enrolling the second generation of PhD candidates  at the studies “Contemporary Philosophy", Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo in 2013/2014 academic year;
-    Decision to announce the competition for enrolling the second generation of PhD candidates from the field of history (Specializations: Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Context of Ancient Europe and the Mediterranean, Bosnian Mediaeval History, History of Bosnia and Herzegovina During the Ottoman Period (1463-1839), History of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 19th and 20th Centuries), Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo in 2013/2014 academic year;
-    Decision to announce the competition for enrolling the second generation of PhD candidates at studies from Literature of BH Peoples, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo in 2013/2014 academic year;
-    Decision to announce the competition for enrolling the PhD candidates - the third cycle of studies  - at the Departments for Physics, Geography, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University of Sarajevo;
-    Decision to announce the competition for enrolling the PhD candidates – the third cycle of studies -  for the area of Teaching the Natural and Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University of Sarajevo;
-    Decision to announce the competition for enrolling the PhD candidates at the studies entitled “Gender Studies” in 2013/2014 academic year, Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Sarajevo;

The Quality Assurance Board, in accordance with its responsibilities prescribed by the UNSA Statute and the Senate Decision no. 01-34-47/13, of 27 December 2012, submitted to the UNSA Senate for adoption the document entitled “Self-Evaluation Report of the  University of Sarajevo”  which was unanimously adopted, with the proviso that in the document information on the National Museum and the Gaza Husrevbey’s Library in Sarajevo as new associate member institutions of the University ought to be entered, and the subsequent amendments arising from it.

Prof. Dr. Senada Dizdar delivered a presentation on the information literacy application regarding the visibility of the University of Sarajevo, with the aim of improving the position of University of Sarajevo at the Ranking Web of Universities list. Having this in mind, it was stated that all the member intuitions, associated member intuitions and university centers are obliged to register and use the domain under the unsa.ba domain in order to enforce the unification of the University of Sarajevo’s domain space. Also, the use of unsa.ba domain is obligatory in official communication of the teaching and non-teaching staff.

During the session, the enrolment plan for the first year of the first cycle of studies in the 2013/2014 academic year was presented. The issue of enrollment of children of shahids and the fallen soldiers and children without parents was raised who are enrolling for the first time in the first year, and it was concluded that this category of students be granted with the right of free education at University of Sarajevo’s Faculties and Academies. With regard to this issue, the UNSA Senate and SPUS will start the initiative to secure funding for this category of students.

At this Senate session it was concluded that the call for competition for enrollment in the first year of the second cycle of studies in 2013/2014 academic year will be published on 28 August 2013 and that it will be open until 27 September 2013.

The UNSA Senate also adopted the Calendar of activities and implementation of study programs at the University of Sarajevo for 2013/2014 academic  year, as well as the academic calendar of the University of Sarajevo in 2013 / 2014.

The Senate adopted the Report of the Commission for the Recognition of Foreign Higher Education Qualifications at the University of Sarajevo and the Report of the Commission for Conducting the Recognition of Foreign Academic Higher Education Qualifications. Also, the Senate adopted the report of the University’s Publishing Council, with the consent given to the publication of one book as a university textbook.

Under the item “International Cooperation”, the Senate gave its consent to signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Sarajevo and the University of Tübingen (Germany).

The Senators were acquainted with information that University of Sarajevo starts a Japanese language course in 2013/2014 academic year. The course will be funded by the Japanese Foundation. At the session Senators supported the initiative to introduce elective courses on the language, culture and literature of the Romani.
