The 14th UNSA Senate Session Held



The UNSA Senate had its regular 14th Session on 25/09/2013 with eleven agenda items.
At the held Session, UNSA Rector, Prof. Dr. Muharem Avdispahic consigned the Decision on Appointing Prof. Pjer Zalica to the office of UNSA Academy of Performing Arts Dean for 2013-2017 term in office. Rector Avdispahic also consigned the Decision on Appointing Prof. Dr. Borislav Petrovic to the office of UNSA Faculty of Law Dean for 2013-2017 term in office.
In compliance with the Law on Amendments to the Law on Higher Education in Sarajevo Canton and University of Sarajevo Statue, on its Session of 25 September 2013 the UNSA Senate for the first time gave its consent for election into scientific vocation for three teachers from one UNSA Faculty.
At the Session, consents were given for election into scientific vocation for 28 teachers from six Faculties and one scientific institute, and equivalence procedure approved for electing at two UNSA Faculties. The consents were also given for engagement of teachers from other Universities from our country and abroad at two UNSA Faculties.
The UNSA Senate approved the Decision for the competition to elect a teacher for the International Private Law field at the UNSA Faculty of Law.
Also Decisions were brought for 41 candidates engaged in the PhD obtaining process at 13 Faculties.

At this Session, the UNSA Senate approved the Decision to change study rules for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Sarajevo. 
Under the agenda item “Approving the Curricula”, the UNSA Senate gave its consent to:
•    Amendments to the first and second study cycles’ curriculum at the UNSA Faculty of Architecture;
•    The second study cycle’s curriculum at the School of Economics and Business, University of Sarajevo under the title “Local Self-Government Finances” in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics, University of Zagreb;
•    The second study cycle’s curriculum at the School of Economics and Business, University of Sarajevo under the title “Economic Diplomacy “ in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics, University of Zagreb;
•    The second study cycle’s curriculum at the School of Economics and Business, University of Sarajevo under the title “Bookkeeping and Revision“ in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics, University of Mostar;
•    The third study cycle’s curriculum from the field of Social work at the UNSA Faculty of Political Sciences;
•    Amendments to the curricula (for all Departments), as well as the proposed list of elective courses – internal and external list of elective courses for 2013/2014 academic year at the UNSA Faculty of Philosophy.
•    Amendments to the curricula for the integrated study (the first and second cycle of studies) of Veterinary Medicine at the UNSA Faculty of Veterinary Medicine;
•    The third study cycle’s curriculum – PhD studies at the UNSA Faculty of Veterinary Medicine;
•    Intercultural Summer School of Philology’s program on the topic of “Intercultural relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, East and West“ organized by the UNSA Center for Interdisciplinary Studies;

Under the agenda item “Calls for Competition”, the UNSA Senate gave its consent to:
•    Decision to call for the competition for students enrolment in the third cycle of studies from the field of Social work at the UNSA Faculty of Political Sciences in 2013/2014 academic year;
•    Decision to call for the competition for the student enrollment of the first generation at the third cycle of studies under the title of “Biomedicine and Healthcare“ at the UNSA Faculty of Medicine;
•    Decision to call for the competition for the student enrolment in PhD Studies (third cycle of studies) at the UNSA Music Academy in 2013/2014 academic year;

The consent was given to the amendments to the Decision on determining steam areas and their corresponding subjects at the UNSA Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The Senators were acquainted with the curriculum and agenda of the TRAIN (Training & Research for Academic Newcomers) Program, which is coordinated by the King Baudouin Foundation that is intended for training the PhD students and junior academic staff at four Western Balkan Universities. The program’s goals are training, implementation and evaluation of structured professional development program for junior academic staff (assistants, assistant professors, PhD candidates or doctors of sciences with less than three years of working experience). The implementation of project goals will lead to the advancement of academic personnel at partner universities who will take the key role in supporting the “knowledge triangle” in this region. The training will take place in October and November 2013 and EU trainers will do the training in English. 
The Ceremonial Inauguration of Graduates, MA and PhD Graduates of the University of Sarajevo will take place in the “Juan Antonio Samaranch” Olympic Hall in Sarajevo on 9 November 2013. The Diploma Awarding Ceremony will take place simultaneously in the aforementioned Hall.
At the Session, UNSA Senate rendered a Decision on determining standards for awarding the “Golden Badge”, “Silver Badge” and “University of Sarajevo Charter” awards in 2013/2014 academic year. 
Under the agenda item by the name of “Academic Network of the University of Sarajevo”, the Senators were acquainted with the state of ICT infrastructure at the UNSA, which is going to be implemented at all UNSA organizational units with the goal of integrating the IT space at the University of Sarajevo.
The holding of an international conference upon the occasion of marking the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the First World War under the title of “The Position of the First World War in the History of Europe” was announced, that is organized by the UNSA Institute for History in collaboration with seven scientific institutes from Europe. The Conference is to be held from 19 to 21 June 2014.
Within the agenda item “International Cooperation”, the Senators were acquainted with the initiative launched by the National University of Science and Technology from Islamabad (Pakistan) for establishing the cooperation in the field of science and technology at the third cycle of studies at the University of Sarajevo in English.

The Senators were also acquainted with the following activities that are to be implemented in time to come:
•    3 October 2013. – University of Sarajevo Honorary Doctorate awarding to Prof. John Louis Esposito, Director of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the Georgetown University in Washington D.C. (USA) and President of American Academy of Religion;
•    7 and 8 October 2013 Contact seminar between Sweden and WB countries with the focus on future cooperation within the EU programs and Linnaeus-Palme program;
•    9 October 2013– “From Oriental Term to Orientalistics” Seminar honoring Dr. Esad Durakovic, academician. On that occasion, Prof. Dr. Yasir Suleiman, Prince Alwalid Center for Islamic Studies at the University  of Oxford will be awarded with Ambassador of the University of Sarajevo recognition;
•    10 – 13 October 2013 – The Third International Conference “Bosnia and Herzegovina: In Common History and Multicultural Atmosphere of the Balkans” (http://www.ibac2013.org/);
•    13 – 15. October 2013 - The Alliance of Universities for Democracy: 24th Annual Conference “Democracy & the University in a Turbulent World“ (http://www.audem.org/docs/pdf/2013callforpapers.pdf).

The Senators were informed that in collaboration with the Japanese Embassy in B&H, and with the support of Japan Foundation that Japanese language course will be offered to the citizens of B&H for 2013/2014 academic year and that certified native Japanese language speaker will conduct it.  The Orientation day will take place in the amphitheater of the UNSA Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Thursday 26 September 2013 in 18:00. The start of that Course is scheduled for 1 October 2013.

The Senate adopted the Report submitted by the UNSA Commission for Recognition of Foreign Higher Education.
The Senate also adopted the Report submitted by UNSA Publishing Department whereupon four publications got consent to be published as university publications.
