Act of Remembrance

Prof. Dr. SADUDIN MUSABEGOVIC
(1939-2014)

The Act of remembrance for Prof. Dr. Sadudin Musabegovic took place in the UNSA Rectorate’s Ceremonial Hall on Tuesday 15 April 2014. Numerous, colleagues, friends and students and others bid farewell to Sadudin Musabegovic, UNSA professor emeritus, prominent author and art theorist. The eulogies were delivered by Prof. Dr. Ugo Vlaisavljevic, UNSA Vice-Rector and Academy of Fine Arts colleagues: Prof. Nusret Pasic and Doz. Dr. Dubravka Pozderac - Lejlic.

“Today we bid farewell to Sadudin Musabegovic, UNSA full professor of Aesthetics, Theory of Fine Art and Film Aesthetics. He was the Academy of Fine Arts Dean and a visiting professor at other universities. There is no need to present Musabegovic as author to the academic community, nor educated cultural community" said Vice-Rector Vlaisavljevic. He reminded the attendees to the titles professor Musabegovic’s books : Plans and sequences, 1976, Mimesis and construction, 1982, Map and Territory, 1995, Jargon’s scraps, 1998, Basin and whirlpool, 2000, Raz/lika/a/Art, 2005, Loose sayings, 2006, Film as a form of time, 2007, and his engagement in Lica, Opredjeljenja, Odjek, Dijalog, Dialogos Library.

“Even in the shortest review of the Sadudin Musabegovic’s opus, of the type of opus in which every tall and magnificent construction of the university rests, every being of the academic community, in the review requested by the memento mori, when to pay tribute, perhaps something important can be said, however not enough, never quite spelled out” said Vice-Rector Vlaisavljevic . He added: “One should say something about the philosophy written on the trail of Husserl and de Saussure, within the part or collision of the linguistic sign and image, idea and figures, which operated the Musabegovic’s pen, no matter what he had written. We should be talking about the aesthetics and philosophy of art whose new page he was writing almost every day of his life. We should be talking about his vocation of editor, rank one long composition of editorial rooms and tables, in which he entered as quite a young author and stayed there to the last breath. We should be talking about his theory of film, which from the beginning turned into, as he himself frankly admitted in quoting Bergson, his own cinematic perception of life, experiencing each character that shows before the eyes. We should be talking about Musabegovic’s engagement during the war, about his war books and art events that he conceived and staged in the vortex of war which he most strikingly presented in the hot cauldron of Pasic's war exhibition, around which he sensed the dance of demonic forces. We should be talking about many things… Musabegovic’s will is too long…”

When speaking about Professor Musabegovic, Prof. Nusret Pasic pointed out that he was writing about graphic artists, sculptors, painters and appearances and personalities significant for Bosnia and Herzegovina's art scene.

“As a man of vast knowledge and a true connoisseur of the art language he knew how to see through surface layers and to look for meanings in-depth analysis that will open and provide a more complete overview and understanding of the multi-layered works. Tolerant and benevolent, he was trying to, he know how to find and point to the successful passage and valuable aspects of the analyzed works, all in order to show the creative potential of the author. He used the criticism to discover for us in the work the value and point to a possible way of development and action" said Prof. Pasic.

Doz. Dr. Dubravka Pozderac - Lejlic referred to the long-standing collaboration with Professor Musabegovic whom she remembers as a professor of wide horizons, open mind, a philosopher, thinker, essayist, writer of unique style . Doz. Dr. Dubravka Pozderac - Lejlic recalled Sadudin Musabegovic as war and postwar Dean of the Academy of Fine Arts, which was struggling to retain teachers, students, to hold classes in the continuity. He also remembers him as a man engaged in the cultural scene as an initiator of artists assemblies, authors of essays, testimonials and ... Although ill, the last months of his life, as Doz. Dr Pozderac - Lejlic stated, professor Musabegovic encouraged fellows at the Academy of Fine Arts, followed the events at the Academy,  and mentored  master's theses.

“We will remember Professor Sadudin Musabegovic in the indistinctness of his extraordinary personality, as a thinker, knower, esthetician, instructor and speaker, who encouraged us in our successes, advised when we were in doubts, and empathized when we were in bad moods. We will remember Professor Musabegovic as a person who in doing everything he did trying to add a human face. As he wrote somewhere, on the route of passing, the human face slowly fades”.  Said Doz. Dr. Dubravka Pozderac - Lejlic.
