Press Conference Held

 

In the University of Sarajevo – Rector's office a press conference organized on the scheduled protests at the University of Sarajevo for 8 September 2014 by the UNSA Union was held in the UNSA Rectorate on 8 September 2014.

UNSA Rector, Prof. Dr. Muharem Avdispahic, Dr. h. c., Prof. Dr. Mevludin Mekic, Chairman of the UNSA Steering Committee, University Vice-Rectors, Prof. Dr. Zehra Kreho, Prof. Dr. Faruk Mekic and Prof. Dr. Ugo Vlaisavljevic, Dr. Suvad Konakovic, UNSA Secretary General and members of the University of Sarajevo Steering Committee: Prof. Dr. Almedina Zuko, Prof. Dr. Velija Katica, Mr. Sifet Kukurz and student Amar Nurkovic participated in the conference.

In his address Rector, Prof. Dr. Avdispahic recalled the attitude of the UNSA Senate from the third thematic session of Wednesday, 3 September 2014: "The Senate emphasizes the importance of preserving the University’s unity and coordination in actions of the Union and all University bodies in the integration process, respect for institutional autonomy and creating conditions in which the University of Sarajevo can fulfill to its social role as a leading academic institution."

Having emphasized that the University of Sarajevo has never been less politicized than it is now, Rector Avdispahic stated that by paying the residual tranches, the minimal conditions for continuing teaching and research process in accordance with the academic calendar of the University of Sarajevo have been created, emphasizing the necessity of continuing social dialogue aimed at overcoming the strategic issues in the treatment of the University and higher education, in accordance with the commitments taken by the BiH when signing the Bologna Declaration and the commitments contained in the Framework Law on Higher Education.

On Thursday 4 September 2014, the 5th extraordinary session of the UNSA Steering Committee, concerning the scheduled strike at the University of Sarajevo on 8 September 2014 organized by the UNSA Union took place. When speaking about session findings, Dr. Mevludin Mekic, Committee Chairman pointed out that the Steering Committee supports the position of the Senate: that conditions for teaching and scientific research process have been fulfilled, and that the Steering Committee supports the position of the Senate, which emphasizes the need for continued dialogue with the CS Government and the UNSA Union, in order to solve all the problems which University faces in its work.

Student member of the Steering Committee, Amar Nurkovic pointed out that the students of the University of Sarajevo support the demands of the UNSA Union, but he expressed concern that now it is not the time to hold a strike.
