The promotion of Springer international publication “International Handbook of Research in History, Philosophy and Science Teaching” was held at the University of Sarajevo on Tuesday 9 September 2014.
The publication, whose editor Prof. Dr. Michael R. Matthews from the University of New South Wales (Australia), is the result of contributions to Springer's renowned journal Science & Education. This publication documents the profiled survey of the history and philosophy in the field of theoretical and pedagogical concerning the teaching of natural sciences and mathematics. The publication provides a logically structured material as a guide for training in the natural sciences and mathematics, and is completed with contents from the history and philosophy and the philosophy of education in general.
In his keynote address, Prof. Dr. Ugo Vlaisavljevic, UNSA Vice-Rector pointed out that this is the first handbook that connects history, philosophy, pedagogy and teaching of science and natural sciences. He made an emphasis that the handbook, which has been done in three volumes, includes 76 chapters by 125 authors from 30 countries.
One of the authors of this handbook, Prof. Dr. Zalkida Hadzibegovic from the UNSA Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics said that it was an extremely important part of the international level, but also certainly significant and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The handbook is presented by the editor, Prof. Dr. Michael R. Matthews, saying that the publication was intended for university lecturers who would in future teach in various fields of science. He stressed that it brings a number of chapters in physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology or mathematics, specifying how to teach those subjects. Each chapter contains additional material from the history and philosophy of these subjects, and the goal is to make them interesting for the kids, and make them think.
