DIALOGUE about the book “Multi-Denominational Herzegovina.
The Authority and Loyalty in Late Ottoman Society”
In the UNSA Rectorate’s Ceremonial Hall on Friday 10 October 2014, the DIALOGUE about the book “Multi-Denominational Herzegovina. The Authority and Loyalty in Late Ottoman Society” by Hannes Grandits was organized by the Institute of History. The participants were Drago Roksandic, Vera Katz, Edin Radusic, Jasmina Brankovic, Amila Kasumovic, Alddin Husic, Zedad Beslija, Hana Younis, Fahd Kasumovic and Husnija Kamberovic.
The book “Multi-Denominational Herzegovina” by Hannes Grandits, head of the South-Eastern Europe History Department at the Humboldt University in Berlin is a new book released by the Institute for History in Sarajevo, within the “Historical Monograph” edition.
The subject of the book is closely specified by the subtitle ”The Authority and Loyalty in Late Ottoman Society”, and according to the author in its focus is the former Ottoman border region of Herzegovina during the Tanzimat era. In the era of Tanzimat began the organization of “modern” social order in Herzegovina, so this book tracks changes that occurred in Herzegovina during this period.
Grandits in this voluminous book, containing approximately 500 pages, analyzes those changes through the chapter titled “The Nobility Elite against the State Bureaucracy,” “Rural Environment and Loyalty: Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim Contexts”, “City Planning and the Period of the Tanzimat”, “Religious Leadership and Reform of Order Based on Religion,” “New Actors and Actions during the Tanzimat” and “Revolting Society: Violence and Loyalty.”
