University December Days Ceremony

PhD Candidates and University of Sarajevo Professors Emeriti Promotion

The PhD candidates and University of Sarajevo Professors Emeriti promotion was organized as a part of the “University December Days” ceremony  in the University of Sarajevo, on 18 December 2014.
UNSA Rector, Prof. Dr. Muharem Avdispahic, HonDSc, delivered the welcome address in which he presented the results achieved by the University of Sarajevo in 2014.
Having reminded that in 2014 the University of Sarajevo was enriched by full membership of two theological Faculties and five Research Institutes, Rector Avdispahic pointed out that a major step towards the integrated university was made by establishing the unitary Board of Directors, in which, for the first time, the Senate elected academic community’s representatives - 4 professors and one student.
“For the first time the report on the work of the integrated University was made, the aggregate financial report submitted, aggregate cumulative capital investment plan for the next three years” said Rector Avdispahic. He also added “Unfortunately, the years was such that the Senate had to hold extraordinary sessions in January, March, July and September dedicated to the difficulties in financing the University.“

Rector Avdispahic recalled the period of catastrophic floods and a shining example of students of the University who have demonstrated that they are not educated only for the experts in their respective fields, but for very responsible citizens prepared to lead this society in better dawn.
When presenting numerous events that took place in 2014, Rector Avdispahic pointed out that in June the University of Sarajevo participated in organizing of three international events which commemorated the hundredth Anniversary of the Great War - European Summit “100 for the next 100 in the Danube region”, a conference of historians “The Great War: regional approaches and global contexts” and the interdisciplinary cultural event “Far-reaching shots from Sarajevo -  1914-2014; Events-Tales-Memories“. He also  reminded the attendees that the University of Sarajevo’s accreditation was successfully done in July of this year that allowed the University of Sarajevo’s entering in the Register of Accredited Higher Education Institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“With the Corridor 5c, we need the other kind of strategic corridor to European society by the means of the knowledge economy” said Rector Avdispahic and added that the Italian presidency of the European Commission is reaching its end. He pointed out three types of activities in which the UNSA is engaged - formalization of the EU strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian region; presenting the EU’s vision of the integrative process for the Western Balkans at the October meeting on cooperation between diplomacy and universities, and a presentation of the possibilities of accessing  the distributed network of top research labs CERIC-ERIC within the Central European Initiative.
“EU is our future. Our view must reach even further – towards  a globalized world – the second generation of the Japanese language students is being educated; last week an agreement regarding the establishment of the Confucius Center at the University of Sarajevo was signed; on Monday the possibilities of modern India and the area in which India is among the world leaders were presented. Japan is a G-7 country, China is the first, while India the second fastest growing world economy” said Rector Avdispahic, and emphasized that the strategic goal of the University of Sarajevo is building a city of science and culture in the former Marshal Tito military barracks, adding that in January will be published an international tender for the completion of the main project of the University of Sarajevo University Library, which will be built and equipped by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s grant.
Rector Avdispahic mentioned that the first EU project coordinated by the University of Sarajevo in 1996, immediately after the war, was the Development of information technology.
“Now, in conditions of high youth and graduates unemployment, in order to open wider possibilities provided by high technology for inclusion in the global labor market, knowledge and skills, the most urgent step is to remove B&H gray from the map of the Pan-European network of research and education. It is a framework and a new reality in which we gathered on today’s ceremony” said Rector Avdispahic in his address.
