The Vienna University celebrated its 650th Anniversary on 12 March 2015. Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Reinhold Mitterlehner, Minister of Science attended the Ceremony that took place in the main University building. Messrs. Fischer and Mitterlehner addressed the attendees, after the speech delivered by the Vienna University Rector, Professor. Dr. Heinz W. Engl. University of Sarajevo Rector, Prof. Dr. Muharem Avdispahic, HonDSc, attended the ceremony on behalf of the University of Sarajevo.
The Vienna University is the oldest university in the German-speaking countries and one among of the oldest European ones. Austrian duke Rudolph IV of Habsburg dynasty founded the University in 1365, therefore the University bears a moniker, after its founder, Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis.
The Vienna University has 15 Faculties and 4 centers for scientific research that employ approximately 9700 people. The University offers 180 academic programs for 92,000 students making it the largest Austrian institution for research and education.
On the occasion of marking this important anniversary, in 2015, the Vienna University will present the achievements from the science and research area. 100 jubilee programs have been planed, whose motto is "We ask questions". The Vienna University also hosted an international conference under on the subject “Global Universities and their Regional Impact” on 13 March 2015.
